Greg Ross

Greg Ross chips out of a bunker next to hole No. 9 during a playoff in Thursday’s Pete Peterson Senior Tournament at the Falls Country Club. Ross, of Fort Frances, won the overall championship in the age 50 and over tourney when he defeated Tom Sutch with a birdie on the second playoff hole after both golfers completed 18 holes tied at 75.

After playing hole No. 9 twice in a playoff, Greg Ross won the overall championship in Thursday’s Pete Peterson Senior Tournament at the Falls Country Club.

Ross, who lives in Fort Frances and is also the superintendent of the Heron Landing Golf Course, had been part of the Championship Flight based on his handicap and age when he carded a 75 for 18 holes to tie with Tom Sutch, who was part of the third flight, for the overall top spot out of 135 golfers age 50 and older.

When both golfers faced each other on the first playoff hole on the par-four No. 9, Sutch’s second shot landed on the green for a long putt for birdie, while Ross landed in a nearby sand trap.

Sutch two-putted and Ross chipped out of the sand close enough to one-putt as both golfers ended up with a par to force another playoff hole on No. 9.

“Tom played a great round of golf,” Ross said. “I got lucky enough to make the sand save on the first playoff hole.”

On the second playoff hole, Ross reached the green on his second shot to set up a birdie putt, while Sutch’s second shot rolled off the green. After Sutch chipped on the green, Ross sank the putt to win the playoff and capture the overall title.

“That was a real tough putt,” Ross said. “It slided downhill, and I got lucky enough that it hit the hole and went in.”

Gift certificates at the Falls Country Club pro shop were awarded to the overall champion as well as the top-three finishers in each flight and the closest to the pin on holes No. 6, 11, 14 and 16.

The golfers were flighted based on handicap and age with the top gross score in each flight winning. Ties in the flights were broken by age with the older player winning the tiebreaker.
