I’ve already had the privilege of meeting and speaking with several people on the local sports scene since I began working at The Journal slightly more than three weeks ago.
As the spring sports season has unfolded at both the prep and collegiate levels, readers of The Journal have likely noticed that I’ve put together previews to provide an overview of the local teams.
I’ve been looking forward to getting outside and covering spring sporting events locally probably as much as the athletes and the coaches have been looking forward to participating in them. Each season springs hope of a successful year.
There’s still much more sports-related news for me to become familiar with locally. I’ve just scratched the surface as to what’s going on this spring, let alone the rest of the year.
I’d like to provide readers with a wide variety of sports coverage of local interest. That includes, for instance, players and coaches with local ties moving onto successful collegiate or professional sporting careers.
The up-and-coming local athletes are also of interest to readers, and that includes youth sports.
To give sports-related matters the coverage they are due, however, I need to be aware of them.
A passing reference I heard earlier this week on the local airwaves about an effort to form an athletic hall of fame in International Falls led to me being able to provide a related story in today’s edition.
There’s a saying in journalism that news delayed is news denied. Being able to provide sports coverage in a timely manner is what I strive to do as The Journal’s sports editor.
Earlier this month I was unaware of a local youth sports program being involved in a state tournament. A message was left at The Journal, but contained no information about who to contact or when and where the event would take place.
Some people associated with the organization had been led to believe that an article previewing the tournament would be published in The Journal. In fact, the organization’s Facebook page stated that an “article will be in the Falls paper with quotes from some of the I Falls (athletes).”
Upon doing some checking, I found out that the person who had intended to submit an article to The Journal never got around to writing it.
To ensure the sports activity you are involved with will be covered in a timely manner, I’d like to hear from you in advance. Please e-mail, fax or call me at The Journal.
