MNR Staff Report

On May 22 two males from Winnipeg were camping on Dunbar Lake, Idaho Road north of Sioux Lookout.

In the early hours of the morning a 65-year old male at the site was dragged out of a structure within the camp by a black bear. He suffered a bite and several scratches during the encounter. The second male, 63, at the site heard the commotion and came to the rescue by shooting and killing the bear. The victim was treated for non life threatening injuries at Meno-Ya-Win Hospital and released.

The public is reminded to take precautions about attracting bears while outdoors and not to approach or attempt to interact with bears.
