Clover Cruise runners

Seth Johnson, Jen Erickson and Lexi Erickson cross the bridge leaving downtown Littlefork while competing in Sunday morning’s Clover Cruise 10K.

In what has become an annual tradition at the Northern Minnesota District Fair, Dennis Ogilvie has won the “Clover Cruise 10K” for the fourth year in a row.

On Sunday, Ogilvie, 26, of Emo, Ontario, took a big lead early en route to remaining the race’s only winner in its fourth year of existence.

However, after having set the course record last year in 38 minutes, 43 seconds, Ogilvie said he was “very disappointed” with his winning time in 2012 of 42:03.

“It just wasn’t my day (Sunday),” he said. “I ran hard for the first mile, mile and a half, and then kind of shut it down after that.”

While Ogilvie described the weather for running as “pretty good conditions — just maybe a tad warm,” he attributed his slower time this year to being injured and not running as much as he usually does the past couple of weeks.

Provided he is still in the area next year, Ogilvie said he will be seeking his fifth straight Clover Cruise 10K title.

Ogilvie, who placed runner-up July 4 in the Bronco 5K, said he is thinking about running next month in the Bass Dash 5K in the Falls and possibly in a couple of half marathons in September.

This year’s top female in the 10K race had been the top female the previous two years in the Clover Cruise 5K. Lexi Erickson, 13, from the Falls, who ran along with her mother, Jen, 39, received the trophy as the overall top female after finishing 3 seconds in front of her mother.

Like several others in Sunday’s Clover Cruise races, Lexi and Jen Erickson had been in a 5K race a day earlier. In Saturday’s Lady Slipper/Mingo’s Miles 5K at Lake Kabetogama, Lexi placed sixth and Jen came in eighth overall out of 72 finishers.

Aili, Severud top 5K

Two other runners also competing a day earlier at Lake Kabetogama ended up Sunday as the top overall female and male runners in the Clover Cruise 5K.

Danni Aili, 30, of the Falls, crossed the finish line first as the top female and overall finisher in front of the top male, William Severud, 32, also from the Falls, with both clocking a time of 21:10.

Aili and Severud ran together for much of the Clover Cruise 5K.

“I was at the front most of the time,” Aili said. “I had a good, fast start, so I just kept up my pace.”

A day earlier in the Lady Slipper/Mingo’s Miles 5K, Severud came in fifth overall, while Aili placed seventh, about a minute behind him.

Aili, a 2000 FHS graduate who ran cross country for the Broncos, also participated July 4 in the Bronco 5K, where she came in 14th.

“It was a lot cooler at (the Clover Cruise 5K), so it was a lot easier,” she said.

Aili also ran in last month’s Grandma’s Marathon in the Duluth area. Next month, she said she is planning on participating in the Bass Dash 5K as well as a half marathon for women in Bloomington, along with likely running in the Backus Triathlon.

36 finish 2012 Clover Cruise races

Of the 36 finishers in this year’s Clover Cruise races, which serve as a fundraiser for the Koochiching County 4-H program, 30 ran in the 5K.

“A little low (turnout), but given all the other things going on (last) weekend and the oft-changing date of the fair, I’m okay with the turnout,” said race organizer Jeff Eibler. “Times reflected the heat and humidity, a little off from last year.”

Last year’s Clover Cruise races were held Sept. 4 when the fair took place on Labor Day weekend. The biggest field of entrants was in 2009 when the fair occurred in late August.
