Mary Dahl art work

The art work of Mary Dahl, first-place winner in the fifth and sixth grade category, is among the entries of the annual Kids Art Contest to be recognized Saturday.

Voyageurs National Park will offer an open house and awards ceremony for the annual Kids Art Contest at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center Saturday.

The contest and open house is scheduled to coincide with National Park Week, proclaimed each year by the president.

From 2 to 4 p.m., visitors may view the Kids Art Contest entries, attend the award ceremony, make a craft, and participate in an afternoon of programs. Refreshments will be offered.

Local artist Loraine Lynn Lufbery will offer from 2 to 4 p.m. a painting demonstration during the afternoon.

At 2:15 p.m., winners of the 9th Annual Kids Art Contest will be recognized. At that time, a “whose tracks are these?” door prize contest will be held and participants may make a craft designed to fit this year’s theme, “Wild about Voyageurs National Park.” Refreshments and cookies will be offered.

From 3 to 3:45 p.m., staff with the Lake Superior Zoo will present a program about birds of prey, featuring an American kestrel and a red-tailed hawk. (See accompanying story.) Also at that time, the winner of the tracks contest will be announced.

More than 370 children entered the Kids Art Contest contest.
