THIS IS TWINS TERRITORY!

For some, these four words are a popular marketing slogan for the Minnesota Twins.

For the Borderland area, it’s a fact. This is Twins Territory.

The first Journal Minnesota Twins Home Opener Poster Contest was ... a home run.

Poster submissions came in slowly at first, slow enough to make a local sports editor predict 20-25 would arrive, but the area proved its worth in the end with 250 submissions.

250!

But only one could win, and Evan Peterson from Mrs. Hasbargen’s fourth-grade class in Littlefork took the crown. His “LET’S SHOW THEM THE WIN IN THE MINNESOTA T‘WIN’S” sign beat out Hunter Wilson’s submission from Mrs. Nemec’s third-grade class at Falls Elementary. Peterson’s sign is pictured above and Wilson’s sign is at right.

Anna Bartnik’s sign from Mrs. Hasbargen’s class and Anthony Cipriano’s sign from Mrs. Winkel’s second-grade class in Littlefork tied for third place. Bartnik’s sign said “Go Twins Knock Their Sox Off,” and Cipriano’s sign said “I heart Twins Baseball,” and the heart was a drawing of a heart with baseball laces coming down each side.

Thirty finalist were initially selected, and when the voting was too close to call, eight super finalists were selected for a second round of voting. Twenty-six highly-qualified Twins votes were cast in round one, while 20 votes were cast in round two. Peterson’s submission was the hands-on favorite.

To view all 250 submissions, go to www.ifallsjournal.smugmug.com, and to pick up a submission, stop by The Journal.

Not only does each participant receive a free cookie from Hardees, but Peterson’s class receives a Domino’s pizza party and prizes from the Minnesota Twins. His parents will also receive a free 1-year subscription to The Journal.

The ultimate prize, however, will be air time — if Evan is so lucky — on Fox Sports Net during the Twins home opener at Target Field, which starts at 3:10 p.m. Monday against the Boston Red Sox. Look for a local sports editor with Peterson’s sign in the first row in right field. Section 139, Row 1, Seat 12 or 13. In case it doesn’t get a close-up, look for the sign just to the left of the foul pole each time a fly ball rockets into deep right field. If you see a sign in the front row close to that location, point at your T.V. and tell your friends that sign was made in the Borderland area, also known as Twins Territory.
