What started as a test run has become a legit run.
The Bronco 5K on the Fourth of July is entering its third year, and participation is expected to be at an all-time high.
The first run — a test run to gauge interest — was held during the 2007 All-Class reunion and featured 72 participants. Last year’s numbers increased to 109, while this year’s numbers are expected to jump even more, especially with July 4 coming on a Saturday.
“If it’s nice out then we get a good turn out,” said Broncos girls track and field coach Jen Erickson, who coordinates the race.
The 5K is also accompanied by a kid’s fun run. The big race begins at 9 a.m., while the fun run starts at 10 a.m.
“Most of the Fourth of July activities start with the parade around noon, but we wanted to provide an early morning option for families looking to make the most out of their Fourth celebration,” Erickson said.
All the proceeds from the race are handled by the Broncos track booster club with the money raised going to the track teams to help purchase equipment.
The pre-registration deadline is Wednesday, but participants can still register the day of the race. The cost is $15 with a T-shirt or $8 without a T-shirt. The cost increases to $13 the day of the race. T-shirts are limited. The kids fun run is free, but participants must pre-register to purchase a T-shirt. Fifty-one participants are currently pre-registered, which is more than last year’s race had at this time.
“The Bronco 5K is a great way to get in your early morning jog or walk before the parade and fun at Smokey Bear Park,” Erickson said.
Pre-registration forms are available online at the Falls High School Web site or at the FHS Community Education office. Contact Erickson at (218) 285-9598 or Jeff Eibler at (218) 286-4081 for more information.
Participants of all ages are welcome. Last year, the youngest participant in the 5K was 5 years old, while the oldest was 72.
