Corrin, Hjelle to face off at AMSOIL Arena
Two Division I men’s hockey players from International Falls will be on opposing teams this weekend when the University of Minnesota Duluth and Ohio State open the 2012-13 regular season at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth.
Willie Corrin, a 2010 Falls High School graduate who has played the past two seasons on the United States Hockey League’s Fargo Force, is in his freshman year of eligibility as a UMD defenseman.
In 2011-12, Corrin recorded 23 assists and 26 points in 60 regular season games for Fargo to lead all Force defensemen in those two categories.
Corrin, who is majoring in criminology, is the latest of 18 Falls natives who have continued their hockey careers at UMD.
Another Falls native who played two seasons at UMD in between two years with the USHL’s Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, Brady Hjelle, is entering his senior season as a goalie for Ohio State.
In his junior year for the Buckeyes, Hjelle played in eight games with five starts, posting a 2.53 goals-against average and .922 save percentage. Last December, he recorded a career-high 37 saves in a 3-2 overtime win against Miami of Ohio.
Hjelle, who is majoring in business, had been a goalie for the Bulldogs in 2008-09 and 2009-10. He is one of four goalies on Ohio State’s roster this season.
The two-game series between UMD and OSU at AMSOIL Arena is scheduled for Oct. 12-13 with the opening faceoff on both nights set for 7:07 p.m.
