Falls girls swimmers lose dual at Virginia
The International Falls girls swimming and diving team recorded six first-place and three runner-up finishes, but ended up losing Thursday’s dual meet at Virginia, 58-46.
Broncos junior Breanna Shofner won both the 50-yard freestyle (27.33 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (1:00.61).
Shofner also joined Courtney Klow, Emily Saari, and Sarah Todd as part of the Falls’ winning 200 medley relay team in 2:07.26.
Shofner and Todd joined Claire Herzig and Blair Johnson for a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:55.64).
Todd also won the 200 individual medley (2:39.34).
Klow placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:12.1).
Saari was part of a 1-2 Bronco finish in the 100 breaststroke when she placed 19-hundredths of a second behind Herzig, who won in 2:23.01.
The Falls’ other individual runner-up finish came in the diving competition when Jessie Hell scored 130.15 points.
The Broncos are competing today at an invitational meet hosted by Mesabi East.
Bronco HOF meeting
The group involved with forming the Bronco Athletic Hall of Fame will hold its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Room 212 at Falls High School.
After last spring’s inaugural induction of nine individuals — seven former players and two coaches — the group is planning in subsequent years to honor up to four Hall of Fame inductees nominated as athletes, coaches/directors/advisors, at-large members or teams.
Correction
Jakob Ettestad scored Falls’ first touchdown in the Sept. 21 football game at Cloquet. A story in The Journal’s Sept. 26 edition incorrectly attributed the touchdown to another player.
