DeBenedet receives honorable mention

Junior Lucas DeBenedet, a forward this past season on International Falls’ boys hockey team, has received honorable mention from the Associated Press.

DeBenedet finished the regular season as the leader in total points in the Iron Range Conference.

Appearing in 25 regular season games, DeBenedet recorded 26 goals and 30 assists for 56 points. He also had the most goals of any player in the IRC.

As voted on by the statewide media for Class A and AA schools combined, Duluth East forward Jake Randolph was named the AP Player of the Year and was also one of three forwards named to the first team.

Another Duluth East forward, Dom Toninato, was named to the second team, as were two players on the Class A runner-up Hermantown Hawks, forward Jared Thomas and defenseman Jared Kolquist.

Henningsen named to All-Section Team

International Falls senior Alex Henningsen, who finished seventh in the diving competition at the 2012 Class A state meet, is the only one from this past season’s Bronco boys swimming and diving team to be named to the All-Section Team.

He qualified for this year’s state meet after finishing third at the Section 4A meet. He had also qualified for state in diving the previous two years, placing 14th in 2010 and 12th in 2011.

The three other 2012 Section 4A state qualifiers were also named to the All-Section Team, which includes the Class A state champion, Sartell-St. Stephen senior Tanner Nordlund, Monticello senior Clayton Metcalf and Sartell-St. Stephen senior Alex VanHeel.

Nordlund is also the Section’s Diver of the Year and Nicole Thull of Sartell-St. Stephen was named the Diving Coach of the Year.
