Porter 22nd at state golf meet on day one

International Falls senior Malinda Porter tied for 22nd on Tuesday in the first day of competition at the Class AA State golf meet being held at the The Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

Porter tallied a 42 on both the front and back nine for an 84, 14 strokes behind the leader, Detroit Lakes eighth-grader Kate Smith, at 70. Smith carded a 37 on the front nine and a 33 on the final nine holes.

Minnewaska senior Brianna Janu, who shot a 42 on the front nine, is the runner-up — 5 strokes behind Smith after recording a 33 on the final nine holes to finish at 75.

In the boys Class AA state competition, Falls senior Brett Musich is tied for 74th place after recording an 84, 17 strokes behind the leader after 18 holes, Detroit Lakes junior Karter Smith.

Smith’s 67 is 4 strokes ahead of three golfers tied for second.

The state boys and girls golf tournaments’ second and final day wraps up with the last 18 holes scheduled for today.

Youth Recreation Golf begins June 21

The Youth Recreation Golf program will begin June 21 at the Falls Country Club for four consecutive Thursdays from 9 a.m.-noon.  

The program— which will run June 21, 28 and July 5, 12 — is for ages 8-14. It will introduce kids to the basic fundamentals of golf — grip, stance, swing, rules and other aspects of the game.  

There is no fee or registration for this program. Kids should bring their own golf clubs. For more information, contact the Recreation Office at 283-2571 ext. 138.

Arrowhead baseball All-Conference team

Three players from International Falls and one from Littlefork-Big Falls have been named to the 2012 Arrowhead All-Conference baseball team.

The Bronco players selected include senior pitcher/catcher Christian Kittelson, junior infielder/ outfielder/pitcher Gunnar Anderson and freshman infielder/outfielder/pitcher Ben Humbert.

Vikings’ sophomore infielder Taylor DeLack was also named All-Conference.

Other All-Conference players and their teams include:
