Though the Minnesota Twins don’t play there anymore, the Metrodome hosted a flurry of college baseball games last weekend, including of a pair of doubleheaders involving Rainy River Community College.
“It was a great experience for our guys,” said RRCC head coach Josh Koenig, who noted the weekend trip to Minneapolis provided the team with an opportunity to play on a Major League-style ball field for the first time.
The Voyageurs ended up winning one of the four games they played last weekend.
In the opening game Saturday night against Anoka Ramsey, RRCC lost, 5-4.
Riley Acra, Angel Hernandez Jr. and Ty Paddock each doubled while Max Gonzalez singled for the Voyageurs.
Paddock also pitched all seven innings to record the loss, allowing 5 runs, four earned, on five hits while walking three with 3 strikeouts.
Anoka Ramsey 10, RRCC 3
The Voyageurs led by a run after four innings before giving up 8 runs over the next two innings and losing the nightcap to Anoka Ramsey, 10-3.
Chandler Ticknor pitched 5 1/3 innings in a losing effort, allowing 7 runs, three earned, on 9 hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Acra pitched the final 2/3 of an inning, giving up 3 unearned runs on 2 hits with a walk.
Giovanni Rivera and Reece Lanier each had 2 hits for RRCC, which had 9 hits total.
Jamall Hudson recorded two stolen bases for the Voyageurs.
Central Lakes 5, RRCC 4
On Sunday, RRCC gave up a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh and lost to Central Lakes, 5-4.
With the game tied 4-4 in the top of the seventh, Hudson doubled with one out, but then got picked off trying to steal third base. Bryn Redhead then singled in what could have driven in Hudson, had he not been picked off the base path, to take the lead.
Redhead and Acra each had two hits for the Voyageurs out of the six team total.
Lanier recorded the pitching loss over seven innings, allowing 5 runs, three earned, on 5 hits and a walk while striking out five.
RRCC 7, Central Lakes 1
The Voyageurs won their final game at the Metrodome over Central Lakes, 7-1.
Paddock had 3 hits and 2 RBI, while Redhead added 2 hits and 2 RBI as part of RRCC’s 9-hit attack.
Josh McInnes recorded his first collegiate pitching victory in a complete game, allowing a run on 3 hits with 2 walks while striking out three.
Koenig said the Voyageurs had an opportunity to win three of the four games last weekend, but didn’t take advantage of their opportunities and are committing too many errors that lead to unearned runs.
Of the 86 runs RRCC allowed this season over 14 games, 41 have been unearned.
“Defensively, we’re not doing the job behind our pitching staff,” Koenig said.
He said the Voyageurs, who are now 4-10 for the season, have a 3.36 ERA after 14 games and also have produced enough offense to be able to win more games.
RRCC is back in action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday against Western Technical College in LaCrosse, Wis.
