The Rainy River Community College baseball team is now 2-4 in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference and 9-23 overall after losing three of four conference games over the weekend.
On Friday, the Voyageurs lost the first of two games at Virginia against Mesabi Range, 13-1, in five innings.
Reece Lanier picked up the pitching loss with two innings of work, allowing 8 runs, six earned, on 6 hits with a walk. Josh McInnes closed out the game in relief, giving up 5 earned runs on 3 hits with 3 walks while striking out a batter.
Ty Paddock accounted for both hits and the only run for RRCC.
Mesabi Range 13, RRCC 6
The Voyageurs had more offense but gave up as many on the way to losing game two to the Norsemen, 13-6.
Paddock pitched all six innings for RRCC, allowing the 13 runs, 11 earned, on 14 hits with 4 walks while striking out six.
Of the Voyageurs’ 8 hits, Max Gonzalez had two of them with six other players accounted for a hit each.
RRCC 4, Vermilion 2
Lanier limited Vermilion to 4 hits pitching a complete game Sunday when RRCC won game one, 4-2, in the Voyageurs’ home opener.
Bryn Redhead doubled and singled for two of RRCC’s 7 hits.
Vermilion 7, RRCC 3
The Voyageurs led by a run after three innings before losing game two to Vermilion, 7-3.
The Vikings scored twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth after having two outs in both innings.
Riley Acra recorded the pitching loss after working 4 2/3 innings, giving up 7 earned runs on 10 hits with 4 walks while striking out a batter. Chandler Ticknor the final pitched 2 1/3 innings without allowing a run on a hit and a walk while striking out two.
McInnes accounted for two of RRCC’s 6 hits.
Voyageurs head coach Josh Koenig said RRCC needs to take advantage of the opponents’ mistakes and find a way to get the third out on defense.
“We need to continue to play with intensity and not let down no matter what the score is,” Koenig said.
The Voyageurs return to action today when they play a conference doubleheader at Hibbing.
