In a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at Ely, the Rainy River Community College baseball team split with Vermilion.
The Voyageurs had only 4 hits over seven innings when they lost the opening game, 9-3.
Max Gonzalez had 2 hits, 2 runs and also recorded a pair of stolen bases for RRCC. Riley Acra and Dominic Casareto added a hit apiece.
Josh McInnes recorded the pitching loss after working 5 2/3 innings. He allowed all 9 runs, six earned, on 13 hits and a walk while striking out four.
RRCC 13, VCC 0
The Voyageurs recorded 9 hits in game two when they shut out Vermilion, 13-0, in five innings.
Reece Lanier pitched four innings to record the win, allowing 2 hits while striking out three. Gonzalez gave up a hit pitching an inning in relief.
Acra had a pair of doubles along with 4 RBI and 3 runs. Gonzalez, Ticknor and Bryn Redhead each added a pair of hits. Casareto accounted for RRCC’s other hit.
Voyageurs head coach Josh Koenig said the second game is an example of what the team can do when it combines good hitting with good pitching.
“The second game we did a better job of hitting the ball,” Koenig said. “Reece Lanier pitched very well and very efficiently.”
RRCC, which is 6-18 overall, plays its first Minnesota College Athletic Conference games today in a doubleheader against Northland at Thief River Falls.
