The Rainy River Community College women’s hockey team only scored a single goal last weekend when the Voyageurs lost all three of their games in the six-team CAN-AM Invitational Tournament held at Bronco Arena.

On Friday, the Thunder Bay Queens, who won the tournament as the only team with a perfect 3-0 record, shut out RRCC, 6-0, as Kristen Andrews recorded the loss in goal for the Voyageurs.

MSU 2, RRCC 0

Saturday’s game against Michigan State University, the only ACHA opponent RRCC faced, featured the Voyageurs outshooting the Spartans, 25-20, but also losing, 2-0, as both goals came with around 4 minutes left in the first and second periods.

RRCC head coach Evan Amdahl noted the two goals were scored on a couple of “odd-man rushes” when the Voyageurs made bad line changes and Michigan State took advantage of them to score.

“It’s a correctable mistake,” Amdahl said.

Sammi Harrity made 18 saves playing all 51 minutes in goal for RRCC.

Western Predators 6, RRCC 1

The Voyageurs’ only goal of the tournament came in Sunday afternoon’s 6-1 loss to the Western Predators from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

RRCC sophomore forward Janet Scherrer scored a second-period, power-play goal assisted by Chelsey Clarke and Delaney Peters.

The Western Predators outshot the Voyageurs, 51-12, as Harrity made 45 saves in goal.

While the Queens won the tournament with the best record, Amdahl said placing the three teams with 2-1 records was done based on head-to-head competition with the Western Predators second, Confederation College third and Michigan State fourth.

Minot State and RRCC were both winless in three games.

Skills competition

One bright spot on the weekend for the Voyageurs was Saturday afternoon’s “Skills Competition,” in which RRCC players won two of the three events.

Scherrer was recognized as the fastest skater by skating a lap around the rink in 17.12 seconds, while Harrity had the best goalie save percentage by stopping nine out of 10 shots.

Confederation College’s Kylie Cornell won the hardest shot contest after hitting the net with a 67-mph shot as measured by a radar gun.

The Voyageurs, who are 1-4 overall and 1-2 in ACHA games, don’t return to action until Nov. 17-18 when they host Confederation College at Bronco Arena.
