Humbert to coach women; Cook takes over men’s program
Rainy River Community College is looking within to try and revive its women’s basketball program.
Dieter Humbert, the current men’s basketball coach, will switch over to the women’s program next season in an all too familiar setting for the long-time local coach. Humbert coached the Voyageur women 19 years before taking over the men’s team in 2007.
“We need to build that back up,” said Humbert, who guided the program to its lone NJCAA National Championship back in 1995. “I want to get that program back to the national level that it was. It’s a win-win.”
The women’s program was canceled this season due to a lack of participation.
Former Voyageur Jack Cook will take over for Humbert and coach the men’s team for the 2011-2012 season. RRCC made the announcement late Monday night.
Cook, who graduated from Orr High School in 1984, played two years at RRCC under Dave Horner. He was a team MVP, All-MCCC player and an All-Division/State player with the Voyageurs. Cook’s vision is to build a team of student-athletes committed to working hard in the classroom and playing hard on the court, according to a press release from the school.
Humbert has the current men’s team sitting in third place in the Northern Division of the MCAC. Last year’s team finished third and reached the state tournament.
“Jack’s going to be excellent,” Humbert said.
