Casey Lynn Evans and Kristen Cruickshank

Rainy River’s Casey Lynn Evans (22) and Kristen Cruickshank reach above the net to block a return hit by Fond du Lac’s Haley Sobczak (1) in Monday’s match in the RRCC gym.

Rainy River Community College’s volleyball team snapped a two-match Minnesota College Athletic Conference losing streak Monday night by winning at home in three straight games against Fond du Lac, 25-18, 25-23, 25-17.

The Voyageurs, who are now 3-7 in the MCAC North and in sixth place in the conference, defeated the Thunder for the second time this season after having  lost last week for the second time against conference foes Mesabi Range and Itasca, the latter winning Friday on RRCC’s court in five games.

“That was a nice win (against Fond du Lac), especially after the intense game Friday,” said Voyageurs head coach Mel Millerbernd. “I knew if we played well, we should be able to beat them, but Fond du Lac’s got a couple of really good (middle hitters). ...

“We stepped it up, I thought, and we blocked better than we have for a while. We’ve been working on that, so that was nice.”

RRCC’s statistical leaders included: Nakita Estling, 28 set assists, nine digs; Kristen Cruickshank, eight kills; Wilma Oombash, seven kills; Rachel Clark, 10 digs; and Mariah Childs, five blocks.

Itasca 3, RRCC 2

Despite winning the first two games Friday, the Voyageurs lost their match to Itasca, 25-23, 26-24, 20-25, 14-25, 9-15.

RRCC was led statistically by: Estling, 46 set assists, 16 digs, and four ace serves; Clark and Emily Jerome, both with 22 digs; Cruickshank, 12 kills; and Childs, 11 kills.

The Voyageurs host their final home match of the season today when they play Vermilion starting at 6:30 p.m. They then have three more MCAC road matches, which wrap up next Tuesday at Hibbing.
