After a one-year hiatus, Rainy River Community College is getting ready to revive its women’s basketball program this fall.

Voyageurs head basketball coach Dieter Humbert, who is returning to the women’s program in 2011-12 after having been in charge of the men’s team for a few years, on Monday introduced the signees who have signed national letters of intent to be on the team next season.

They include two current RRCC students, Nicole Korpi, a graduate of Indus High School, and Heaven Grinsell, an International Falls High School graduate.

“Basketball’s my passion — I always wanted to play in college,” said Korpi. “I like Dieter’s coaching style.”

Grinsell said she will be the third one in her family to play for Humbert.

Megan Klemetsen, who will begin attending RRCC after graduation this year from Indus High School, has also signed a letter of intent.

Humbert said Monday he also has received commitments from three others not on the national signee list to play basketball in 2011-12.

He said he is looking forward to resurrecting the women’s basketball program as a Division III junior college team.

“I’m really excited to be back and get it going — not only get it going but win a lot of games,” he said
