The 2012-13 women’s basketball season began last weekend for Rainy River Community College with a pair of victories at the Mesabi Range Tourney in Virginia.

“I’m definitely pleased with the start,” said Voyageurs head coach Dieter Humbert.

On Friday, RRCC led by seven at halftime before defeating Fond du Lac, 69-51.

Voyageurs freshman guard Teaira Martin recorded a double-double with a team-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. Kai Washington added 11 points with five rebounds, while Mariah Childs also hauled in 12 rebounds.

Humbert said RRCC, which totaled 58 rebounds and 15 steals, played well on defense against the Thunder, though the Voyageurs weren’t as productive as he would have liked to see on offense.

RRCC shot 26-91 (28.6 percent) from the field and went 4-26 (15.4 percent) behind the 3-point arc.

Humbert said RRCC played well both on offense and defense Saturday when the Voyageurs defeated the University of Wisconsin-Barron County, 95-51.

He said RRCC, which recorded 25 steals, gave UW-Barron County trouble with a full-court pressure defense.

Five Voyageur players scored in double figures led by Martin with 23 points, followed by Caseylynne Evans with 14, Childs with 13, Shequeta Randall with 11 and Jessica Alvarez with 10. Evans also had a double-double by hauling in 10 rebounds.

The Voyageurs shot 42-92 (45.7 percent) from the field and went 5-21 (23.8 percent) behind the arc.

Martin “Player of the Week”

Martin, who averaged 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in the first two games of her college career, has been named the Minnesota College Athletic Conference Northern Division’s “Player of the Week.”

Martin, who is from Milwaukee, Wis., also led the Voyageurs against Fond du Lac with 5 steals.

RRCC, which is 2-0 for the season, returns to action at 2 p.m. Friday when the Voyageurs face Itasca at the two-day Vermilion Tourney in Ely.
