Six runners from International Falls will be among the thousands in the Duluth area on Saturday to run 26.2 miles along Old Highway 61 on the north shore of Lake Superior in the 37th annual Grandma’s Marathon.

The runners to have registered from the Falls vary in age from 18 to 66 with the youngest being Marco Griffith, a 2013 FHS graduate who competed in both high school cross country and track and field, and the oldest being Tony Oveson, a long-time distance runner who was in last year’s half marathon.

Two female runners from the Falls in this year’s marathon are Bronco girls track and field head coach Jen Erickson, 40, and Eden Jackson, 28.

Two runners from the Falls who ran in last year’s marathon have registered again for this year’s race.

Robby Lucca, 27, and his cousin, Tyler Wickstrom, 19, ran together last year with Lucca having recorded the faster time finishing in 4 hours, 22 minutes and 30 seconds, placing 3,139th out of 5,788 finishers.

Last year’s overall winner, Berhanu Girma of Cambridge, Mass., finished in 2:12:24. The course record of 2:09:37 was set by Dick Beardsley in 1981.

Saturday’s Grandma’s Marathon begins at 7:45 a.m. just outside of Two Harbors and finishes in Duluth’s Canal Park.

Half Marathon

The 13.1-mile Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon that also begins on Saturday morning in the Duluth area has nine runners registered from the Falls.

Of the four who also ran in last year’s half marathon — Seth Johnson, 33, Stacy Harris, 33, Essa Eide, 33, and Barb Owen-Boerger, 44 — Johnson had the fastest time at 1:59:35 to place 2,315th overall out of 6,478 finishers.

Jack Delehanty of Minneapolis placed first in the 2012 Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon in 1:10:57.

The other five from the Falls entered this year include: Therese Gates, 26; Danni Aili, 31; Brady Fougner, 31; and Len and Richard Peterson, both 66.

Saturday’s Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon begins at 6:45 a.m. approximately three blocks north of the Clearwater Grille on Lake Superior and finishes in Duluth’s Canal Park. It is run on the second half of the Grandma’s Marathon course.
