Hockey wasn’t the only game in town last weekend.

The International Falls City Association held its annual Match Play Classic singles bowling tournament March 16-17 at the International House of Bowling.

This year’s field of 45 bowlers battled Saturday to make the 32-person cut that moved them on to Sunday and the possibility of $2,475 in prize money.

In a new feature to the tournament, Matt Mackenzie won TruStar’s True Star of the Day $75 award by finishing Saturday with the highest handicapped six-game series. He also had the high scratch game of the weekend coming 3 pins short of a perfect game at 297.

On Sunday, the 32-person bracket that made its way to the championship round featured Tim A. Anderson and Duane Rostie, both of whom bowl in the Elks League on Thursday nights and claimed the tournament’s top-two spots.

Anderson was given only 9 pins for a handicap in what turned out to be a nail-biting affair.

The Match Play Classic was decided in the 10th frame of the championship game. Anderson needed a strike or spare to win the championship.

He threw the first ball into the pocket and left one pin standing. A hush then filled IHOB as Anderson threw for a shot at first place.

The second ball edged its way to the pin to pick up the spare. Anderson’s last ball thrown was a strike to seal the victory.
