Ford Pinto

Facebook fans call this Ford Pinto the “world’s most dangerous car.” Some say it has “pretty impressive engineering.”

The Minnesota State Patrol last week stopped what Facebook fans are calling the “world’s most dangerous car.”

The Ford Pinto was heading down U.S. Highway 53 in Koochiching County when a state trooper pulled it over for an “unsafe equipment” stop.

The Minnesota State Patrol’s Facebook page features photos of the vehicle, which brought in about 300 comments about the “Trooper Tale.”

The photos show a gas can resting on what would be the passenger’s seat, wired to a makeshift fuel pump. The fuel hose was set up out of the window and under the front of the hood; the gas can was rigged to the engine.

“Much of the vehicle was rusted out,” the State Patrol spokesperson wrote on the Facebook post. “A tire was actually holding in the front seat.”

Photos show much of the floor of the car missing, with a view of the road beneath it.

A Facebook fan called the vehicle equipment “pure backwoods ingenuity.” Another fan said, “This is some pretty impressive engineering.”

The car was impounded and the driver was cited for a number of violations including: no Minnesota driver’s license and unsafe equipment, according to the State Patrol.
