The regular meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2948 was called to order at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 by president Linda Chezick with 12 members present. The opening ritual was held, roll call of officers conducted with Pat DeLapp, guard, pro-tem and Irene Anderson, chaplain, pro-tem.
One petition for membership was received — Lynda Mai, whose eligibility is her husband, Walter Mai, a member of the Post. A voice vote was taken and Lynda was accepted as a new member.
A motion was made to dispense with the reading of the October meeting minutes as everyone had a copy to read. Correspondence was read as well as the general orders. The treasurers report was read and filed, subject to audit.
DeLapp reported membership at 87.77 percent paid dues. Letters have been sent out to the 21 members who have not paid. Membership dues need to be to DeLapp no later than Dec. 1.
Anderson reported that the Avon fundraiser was a huge success; taking first place in sales. The No-Bake Bake Sale fundraiser has started and funds are coming in.
The 2012 Americanism Fall School Contest winners were announced: In kindergarten through second grade, 187 students participated. Winners were: first place, Courtney Talley; second place, Matt Wherley; third place, Carolyn Amiot In grades 3-4, 67 students participated and first place winner was Mathew Fuller; second place, Megan Mason and third place, Ella Bahr. Prizes awarded were Kmart gift cards.
Chezick reported more than 30 students responded to the Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy Competition. Entries were sent to District for review.
Volunteers are needed to ring the bells for the Salvation Army Nov. 28 at Super One. Volunteers are also needed for the Children’s Christmas Shopping Day at Kmart Dec. 1 and the Kids’ Christmas Party at the Post Dec. 15. There will be a float in the Christmas parade Nov. 23. Those wishing to take part should meet at the Post to decorate at 3 p.m. The parade gets underway at 6:30.
Donations were made to the Department of Minnesota/Homeless Veterans and Snowball Express.
For the Good of the Order: The difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day — the fourth Monday in May and is the day that we remember all United States military personnel who died in wars or other military actions. We fly the flag at half staff and place flags on the graves. Veterans Day — a day to honor all Americans who have worn the nation’s military uniform. It is Nov. 11.
The door prize was won by Rose Rooker.
The meeting was closed at 8:35 with the closing ceremonies.
The next meeting will be at 5 p.m. Dec. 11 (note time change). A brief meeting will precede a carpool to Lenard’s for a meal. An ornament exchange will be featured and monetary donations to the Food Shelf received.
