Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2948 encourage members of the community to wear purple Monday in support and recognition of the nation’s youth who are impacted by the military service of adults in their lives.

Purple Up Day is being held during Month of the Military Child in April. The goal of designating the month is to emphasize the role military children, regardless of age, play while a parent or important adult in their life is serving in the military.

“Military members volunteer, but their families are drafted,” say organizers and supporters of the month. Families, especially children, make sacrifices when a member is serving in the military.

Month of the Military Child was first celebrated in 1986 to recognize that families and children of military members need support as do veterans.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton is expected to send a letter of thanks to children of military members. Last year, the governor sent more than 1,000 letters to children in the state.
