The Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota and the Minnesota Departments of Health and Transportation will hold a Bikeable Community Workshop Thursday in an effort to make the city a more pleasant and safe place to ride, as well as help make the city more safe for everyone on the road.
The workshop will be held in the Lower Level Conference Room of the Koochiching County Forestland Building.
“Hopefully what will come out of it will be a better understanding of how to share the road, “ said Nancy Lee, the coordinator of the event.
Engineers, law enforcement, planners, public health practitioners, school administrators, elected officials and advocates in the community have been invited. The workshop will focus on how engineering, education, enforcement, encouragement, and evaluation, known as the 5 E’s, can improve the safety of cyclists in International Falls. There will also be an explanation of how Minnesota’s traffic laws are related to cyclists and bicycling.
The importance of collaboration and the roles other professions have in supporting bicycling in the community will be recognized. Those who were invited to attend will learn how to apply effective strategies in the community to make bicycling easy, safe, and a healthy choice using things around them.
The workshop will includes a five-mile bike ride for those invited. A small number of speakers will ride the established course today so they can work on what needs to be done in the community beforehand, as well as look at the dangers of problem areas, and what is needed to fix them.
