An email sent Thursday to parents of students in the International Falls School District and a presence at the local schools by Falls police is an attempt to put to rest rumors of a threat, according to Falls Police Cpt. Tom Lynch.

“There is no immediate threat, there is no substantiated threat,” he said. “It’s a combination of what’s happening around the school with the recent school shooting and with the Mayan calendar predicting the end of the world Friday.”

Lynch said school officials and police erring on the side of safety and taking precautionary actions.

In an effort to ease concern, Lynch said that police are scheduled to be at Falls Elementary and Falls High schools today and before school, during lunch at at the end of the school day Friday.

“This is strictly precautionary,” he said. “It’s a combination of things happening in the world and kids talking and alarming parents.”
