Tuesday night’s boys basketball game in the Falls High School gym stayed competitive from start to finish, but this time the Broncos couldn’t pull out another victory against Hibbing.
The Falls, which had won by a point last month on the Bluejackets’ home court, lost the season rematch to Hibbing, 59-53.
“(Tuesday night) we just shot the ball very poorly,” said Broncos head coach Derek Dowty. “We had a lot of good looks (at the basket). We shot the ball 25 percent from the field (and) 24 percent from the 3-point line, so it’s tough to win when you shoot that poorly.
“But our defense kept us in it. It was a close game until the end.”
The Falls took the lead by a point late in the first half when Gunnar Anderson sank a 3-pointer, before Nick Milani sank a field goal inside the arc to give Hibbing a 24-23 lead at halftime.
The Broncos fell behind by double digits early in the second half and weren’t able to regain the lead. However, they came as close as two points with 3:01 to play when Anderson sank two free throws to cut the Bluejackets’ lead to 49-47.
Anderson led the Falls with 14 points, followed by Ben Humbert with 12 and Andre McMillion with 10. All three players sank two 3-pointers.
Connor Perry led Hibbing with 22 points.

Facing a Northeast Range squad not at full strength Friday night, the Bronco boys basketball team trounced the Nighthawks, 83-32, in the Falls High School gym.
“We didn’t see a true Northeast Range team,” Dowty said. “I think they’re a little better than they were (Friday night).”
The Falls, which started the game on a 14-0 scoring run, led 57-11 at halftime and had reserve players see several minutes of action during the second half.
“We played more on our level of basketball than the opponent’s level of basketball,” Dowty said. “We talked about that before the game, and I thought we came out and executed pretty well.”
Forrest Arch led the Broncos in scoring with 16 points, followed by John Bartkowski with 12 and Matt Buhl with 11.
