The International Falls girls basketball team is entering Thursday’s home matchup against nearby rival Littlefork-Big Falls on a three-game winning streak with two of those victories being recorded since last Saturday.

“I think we can still play better,” said Broncos head coach Shawn Gilbert. “The goal is to peak at the right time of the year, so right now we’re still working toward that goal.”

On Saturday afternoon, the Falls won at Two Harbors, 53-42.

Junior center Jenna Vergeldt recorded a “double-double” for the Broncos with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophie Fredrickson and Anah Schwartz each added nine points.

A pair of Two Harbors players accounted for more than half of the team’s scoring led by Christina Stuberud with 12 points, while Lacey Myrdal added 11.

The Falls shot 22-52 (42 percent) from the field, compared to 18-50 (36 percent) for Two Harbors.

On Monday night, the Broncos defeated Lake of the Woods for the second time this season with a 65-58 home victory.

“We beat them by a lot more the first time we played them, but then I think they played a lot better the second time,” Gilbert said. “Once you play a team once or twice, you get to know what they do. I thought they played us very well (Monday night).”

The Bears outshot the Falls from the field by going 24-41 (59 percent) compared to 24-49 (47 percent).

However, the Broncos took advantage of more opportunities from the charity stripe by making 16 of 22 (73 percent) of their free throws. Lake of the Woods made 7 of 10.

Four Falls players scored in double figures led by Vergeldt with 16 points, followed by Rachel Foss with 13, Fredrickson with 12 and Hanna Heibel with 11.

Lake of the Woods was led in scoring by Tate Moeller with 15 points.
