The Bronco girls basketball team remains undefeated three games into the 2011-12 season after two recent lopsided victories.

Following several years of defeats against Deer River, the Falls conquered the Warriors at home Friday night.

The Broncos scored the game’s first 26 points en route to defeating Deer River, 78-26, for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

“We had a good game,” said FHS head coach Shawn Gilbert. “We wanted to come out a little better than we did against Ely (on Nov. 29).”

The first 7 minutes of the game were dominated by the Broncos, who forced Deer River into committing several turnovers and remaining scoreless until the Warriors’ Maija Erzar sank a 3-pointer with about 11:10 left before halftime.

Falls then outscored Deer River 22-6 to lead 48-9 at halftime.

“We played that 1-3-1 press so well that we get a lot of turnovers off that which leads to a lot of easy baskets,” Gilbert said.

The Broncos went 33-49 (67 percent) from the field, compared to 10-39 (26 percent) for the Warriors.

Of the 11 Falls players who scored, four ended up in double figures. Jenna Vergeldt led the Broncos with 16 points, followed by Reva Renollet with 15, Sophie Fredrickson with 12 and Hanna Heibel with 10.

It was the first time the Falls defeated Deer River during the head coaching tenure of Gilbert, whose previous eight defeats against the Warriors had been the most without a win against any team since the 2005-06 season.

“It’s just nice to beat Deer River,” Gilbert said. “I haven’t beat Deer River since I’ve been back in the Falls.”

Falls shot 33-56 (59 percent) from the field, compared to 17-47 (36 percent) for the Bears.

Three other Bronco players scored in double figures. Heibel and Rachel Foss each added 13 points, while Renollet had 12 more.
