Prior to Tuesday night’s lopsided victory, the International Falls boys basketball team found itself in two closely contested games late last week, winning one and losing another.

“We were down pretty good in both games (late last week) by double figures.” said FHS head coach Derek Dowty. “We just battled and battled and battled.”

On Friday, the Broncos overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to win at Virginia, 71-66.

Four Falls players scored in double figures and also accounted for all the team’s points with Josh Owen leading the Broncos with 22 points, followed by Ben Humbert with 19, Gunnar Anderson with 18 and Andre McMillion with 12.

On Saturday, the lead changed hands five times along with four ties as the Broncos lost at home to Esko, 71-64.

Both teams went to their outside game and tallied seven 3-pointers apeice.

Falls’ leading scorer, Gunnar Anderson, made 12 of his 16 points from beyond the arc.

Esko’s Jackson Lindquist made five 3-pointers and ended up with 20 points, while the Eskomos’ Marc Peterson had two baskets behind the arc as part of his game-high 21.

The game’s final lead change came when Lindquist made back-to-back 3-pointers in the first half to turn a one-point deficit into a 20-15 Esko lead. Falls, which trailed in the second half by as much as 12 and as little as a point, was unable to regain the lead.

“(Esko) shot the ball very well behind the 3-point line,” Dowty said. “They also shot free throws very well.”

Esko went 22-25 from the charity stripe, compared to 3-6 for the Broncos.

On Tuesday, Falls scored the first eight points of the first half and the first 11 points in the second half on the way to a 68-34 rout of Greenway.

“We threw a couple pressure packages in, and I think that got to them,” Dowty said. “They turned the ball over. We got some easy buckets.”

The Broncos, who led 40-19 at halftime, used reserve players for much of the second half. Humbert led the Falls in scoring with 18 points, followed by Anderson with 13 and Owen with 11.
