A double-digit deficit in the first half turned into an early second-half lead Thursday night for Falls’ girls basketball team, but in the end the Broncos came up short to Grand Rapids in the FHS gym, 64-57.

“I thought we played really well for a while,” said Broncs head coach Shawn Gilbert said. “Then we started missing some shots, and I think we might have lost focus a little bit.”

Falls fell behind, 20-8, with 9:22 left before halftime, before a free throw by Hanna Heibel capped off a 10-0 run to pull the Broncos within two. The half ended with Grand Rapids in front, 26-24.

Heibel, who ended up with a team-high 14 points, put the Falls in front by a point when she sank one of her three 3-pointers to start the second half.

The lead then see-sawed between the Broncos and Thunderhawks as they exchanged baskets.

Falls’ final lead came just past the midway point of the second half when Rachel Foss, who finished with 11 points, sank her only 3-pointer of the game to put the Broncos in front, 42-41.

Grand Rapids then pulled in front by double digits after going on a 13-2 run.

The two teams last played each other in 2005.
