It took overtime to decide the winner when the 2011-12 season began Friday for Littlefork-Big Falls’ boys basketball team.

The Vikings’ seven-point halftime lead eclipsed in regulation as they ended up losing at home, 67-64, to Chisholm.

“I thought we played well at times, both offensively and defensively,” said L-BF head coach Jeff Maish, who also noted it was tough to start the season by losing to a Section opponent.

The Bluestreaks took the early lead before the Vikings pulled in front 11-9 about midway through the first half on a field goal from Garrett Larson, who ended up with a team-high 22 points before fouling out in the overtime session.

Larson closed out L-BF’s scoring in the final minute before halftime with two free throws, before Chisholm’s Aden Casey made a field goal for two of his game-high 33 points as the Vikings led 28-21 at intermission.

The Bluestreaks narrowed the deficit in the second 18-minutes and forced overtime with the score tied 58-58.

Besides losing Larson in the extra session, in which Chisholm outscored L-BF, 9-6, the Vikings were also without junior guard John Reller.

Maish declined to comment on why Reller didn’t play against Chisholm, but did acknowledge Reller will be back in the lineup for this Friday’s home game against Blackduck.

Two other L-BF players scored in double figures against Chisholm with Taylor DeLack, who accounted for both of the Vikings’ 3-pointers, adding 13 and Jeff Fry having 11.

Aaron Musburger and Austin Campbell added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bluestreaks.

Chisholm and L-BF engaged in a frequent fouling affair with both teams combining for more than 40 personal fouls. The Vikings made 24 shots from the charity stripe.

L-BF has only three games scheduled before New Year’s Day to open the season. After Friday’s home game against Blackduck, the Vikings travel to International Falls on Monday to play the Broncos.
