Scoring more than 90 points wasn’t enough Saturday afternoon when Littlefork-Big Falls’ boys basketball team hosted Lakeview Christian Academy and its 3000-point-plus career scorer, junior guard Anders Broman.
He scored 49 points. His younger brother, freshman guard Bjorn Broman, contributed 22 more as the Lions defeated the Vikings, 107-93.
“When we play a team like Lakeview Christian with Anders Broman and even Bjorn Broman, the points are going to be put up on the board,” said L-BF head coach Jeff Maish. “I was proud of what we were able to accomplish in the first half, defensively, against them.
“We were able to get back on defense. They run 100 mph all the time. We didn’t have enough gas at the end.”
The Vikings controlled the tempo of the game for much of the first half and led at intermission, 43-37.
L-BF held the lead until Anders Broman completed a 3-point play from the charity with 14:00 left in the second half when the Lions pulled in front, 57-56.
After the lead see-sawed between the two teams, LCA’s full-court press continued to force the Vikings into turnovers as the Lions, who erupted for 70 points in the second half, began to pull away with the game.
“The turnovers always play a factor in the game of basketball, and we just need to be able to handle pressure a little bit better,” Maish said.
On the offensive side of the ball, five L-BF players scored in double figures.
Senior forward Garrett Larson, who is the Vikings’ all-time career scorer in boys basketball and was being guarded Saturday by Anders Broman, scored a team-high 27 points, followed by Bryce Burmeister with 19, Taylor DeLack with 17, Jeff Fry with 13 and Tyler Vork with 12.
Larson, who left the game in the final minutes after going down on the court because of problems with cramping, said Anders Broman is “for real.”
“His greatest strength is he doesn’t really have a weakness,” Larson said.
Maish said he hopes the Vikings will learn from Saturday’s game and have another opportunity to face LCA during March in the Section 7A Tournament.
“When we get into a slugfest, we can’t panic when we’re being pressed, and we can’t allow the other team to control the tempo of the game,” Maish said. “We’ve got to slow things up and bring it into our style of basketball.”
