In the final home meet of the season, International Falls’ girls swimming and diving team won all three varsity relay races Thursday night and placed first in six of the nine individual events for a dual victory over Mesabi East, 119-67.

“Our girls came out and swam incredibly well,” said Broncos head coach Jill Herzig. “There were a lot of races that I had them (projected to finish) 1-2 where we were actually 1-2.

“Our girls came out to win the last home meet, so they basically took control after the first race and never let go.”

Senior Rachel Adams, who was one of four Bronco seniors recognized in a special ceremony for the final home meet of the season, was a double individual winner in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly.

“It was a really fun meet,” Adams said. “We’re very grateful to Mesabi for coming to a meet with no starting blocks.

“It was lots of fun. It was a really great Parents Night. It was fun to win the races. Leave it all in the pool. That’s what they tell us to do, and we do our best to do that every time.”

Adams said Herzig moved around the Broncos’ lineup to enter swimmers in events where the head coach believed the team could beat Mesabi East.

“Jill always tries to put us in different stuff to see what we’re best at,” she said. “It’s all leading up to Sections and how we rank everyone at Sections at the end of the season.”

Thursday’s home meet was only the second held this season in the FHS swimming pool, which is 3 1/2 feet deep and now too shallow to allow competitors to dive off starting blocks because of a new rule in effect for 2011-12 requiring a minimum depth of 4 feet.

Bronco senior Morgan Bruess was also a double individual winner in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

As was the case in last week’s home meet, Bronco sophomore Breanna Shofner edged out senior teammate Ashley Hasbargen for first in the 100 breaststroke.

Shofner added a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley.

Falls also placed 1-2 in the 500 freestyle with sophomores Courtney Klow and Kari Arnold finishing first and second, respectively.

Other runner-up finishes for the Falls included junior Abby Oveson in the 100 freestyle and freshmen Clara Wegner in the diving competition.

Though only away meets remain on the Broncos’ schedule, Herzig said she expects the team will do well in dual competition, judging by Thursday’s home meet.

“We could very well not lose another (dual) meet until Sections,” she said.
