International Falls’ girls swimming and diving team ended up in fifth place at Saturday’s Iron Range Conference “True Team” meet hosted by Mesabi East.

Of the eight teams competing, Hibbing won with 1512.5 points, followed by Grand Rapids (1420), Two Harbors (984), Virginia (973), the Falls (960.5), Mesabi East (809), Eveleth-Gilbert (696) and Chisholm (451).

“We were in third going into the last event,” said Broncos head coach Jill Herzig. “The top three teams qualified for True Team state. We were hit hard by illness at the meet and ended up a close fifth.

“Three swimmers were not able to complete the meet and many others did not feel well. Our girls worked hard all day and adapted well to all the changes we had to make during the course (of) the meet.”

Falls senior Morgan Bruess won the 100 backstroke with a season-best swim of 1 minute, 9.5 seconds.

The Broncos’ 200 medley relay team of Bruess, Ashley Hasbargen, Breanna Shofner and Rachel Adams placed second in 2:04.99, while sophomore Courtney Klow joined Bruess, Adams, and Shofner to finish third in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.53.

“We did not have one disqualification in any relays, which was one of our main goals because last year we had four, so we made it a top priority to have safe starts,” Herzig said. “We doubled our team points from last year and it was great to see the girls work so hard and be in the fight right until the end.”

Other top individual finishes for the Falls included Hasbargen and Shofner placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.47 and 1:19.15.

Shofner and Adams finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 50 freestyle in 27.61 and 28.06, while Adams added a seventh-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 1:01.33.
