International Falls’ boys hockey team scored two short-handed goals and a pair of power-play goals to win Friday at Silver Bay, 4-2.
Broncos head coach Bruce Elson said the Falls “played OK” in the victory over the Mariners, but the team needs to work on the five-on-five game.
Silver Bay scored first in the opening period when Bradley Rowlee made a power-play goal assisted by Luke Small and Jordan Fralich.
The Broncos tied the game with less than a minute left in the opening period on a short-handed goal by Brett Musich assisted by Lucas DeBenedet.
DeBenedet then scored an unassisted short-handed goal to give the Falls a 2-1 lead with 7:59 to play in the second period.
The Broncos pulled in front by two with 3 seconds left in the second period on power-play goal by Mason Meyer assisted by Kyle Schneider and Erik Lassila.
Broc Friend scored the Falls’ final goal with 13:26 to play on a power play assisted by Schneider.
Silver Bay closed out the scoring with 4:01 remaining on an unassisted power-play goal by Jonah Koehler.
The Broncos outshot the Mariners, 36-16.
Wes Gunnerson recorded the victory in goal for the Falls with 14 saves.
The Broncos, who improved to 5-3, play today in the first of three games they have this week at a tournament in Warroad.
