International Falls’ girls basketball team lost for the first time this season Wednesday at the Virginia Tournament.
Mora defeated the Broncos, 58-50.
The Falls, which trailed 35-28 at halftime, fell behind by as much as nine points early in the second half before waging a comeback. The Broncos outscored the Mustangs, 9-1, capped off by a field goal from Jenna Vergeldt, to pull within a point, 38-37.
The momentum shifted back in Mora’s favor with an 11-3 scoring to pull back in front by nine as the Falls could come no closer than six points before time expired.
Two Mustang players accounted for more than half of Mora’s points with Noelle Elvehjem having a game-high 21 and Emma Johnson adding 16. Both players had already scored in double figures in the first half with 15 and 11, respectively.
Hanna Heibel had a team-high 16 points, including both of the Broncos’ 3-pointers, followed by Vergeldt with 12 and Reva Renollet with 10. Vergeldt also hauled in nine rebounds.
On Thursday, Falls lost its final tournament game to last year’s Section 7A champion, Mountain Iron-Buhl, 74-43.
