Nick Janttie set a school record with 41 rushing attempts in a single game Friday as International Falls’ football team defeated Hibbing, 28-6, in the Broncos’ final home game of the season.

Of Falls’ 303 rushing yards, Janttie ran for 261 yards and three of the Broncos’ four touchdowns.

Falls, which won its second straight game to improve to 2-4 in the Sea-Range Conference and 2-5 overall, picked up most of its yards on the ground for the second week in a row with only 59 yards coming from passing.

Broncos head coach Jay Boyle said the team has improved its running game with the return of players who were injured earlier this season.

“We’ve got all our guys healthy that we need to do it, and we’re just plain running better than we have,” Boyle said.

Friday’s game at Sports Stadium took place amid windy conditions. A week earlier, when Falls won for the first time this season, the Broncos also relied primarily on a rushing attack as threatening weather in the area resulted in the game being ended at halftime.

“It’s been windy the past two games, which has kept us out of the pass,” Boyle said. “But as soon as we get the right opportunity, we are going to have a very balanced attack, and we’re playing good football right now.”

Falls took control of Friday’s game early. Janttie ran into the end zone from 2 yards away with 7:22 left in the opening quarter.

The Broncos were back on offense 4 seconds later when Hibbing fumbled the ensuing kickoff on its 37-yard line. Falls was able to overcome a holding penalty on the drive and scored again with 3:38 left in the first quarter when Janttie ran into the end zone from 8 yards away.

Falls led 20-0 at halftime after Gunnar Anderson threw a 9-yard scoring strike to Ben Humbert.

The Broncos’ final touchdown came with 8:05 left in the third quarter when Janttie scored on a 9-yard run.

Falls limited Hibbing to 185 total yards on offense, 144 of which came on the ground. Almost a third of the Bluejackets’ offense came on one play in the fourth quarter when Chris Hanson ran 58 yards for Hibbing’s only touchdown.

The Broncos close out their regular season on the road tonight at 7 when they play Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin.

“We need to believe that we can finish out the (regular) season 3-0, and we need to go down to Greenway and take care of business,” Boyle said.
