After having only two victories in eight games this season, International Falls’ football team was outscored by its opposition by more than double.
The Broncos gave up 254 points and scored 114. Nearly 100 of the opponents’ points had been unanswered with a pair of 49-0 losses to both Foley, the non-conference opponent the Broncos opened the season against, and Hermantown, the Sea-Range Conference champions.
In 2011, the opposition also more than doubled the Falls in total rushing yardage for the season, 1,822-798, though the Broncos registered more passing yards than they gave up over eight games, 851-637.
Despite totaling more yardage passing than rushing, Falls’ two victories at home against Eveleth-Gilbert and Hibbing earlier this month involved the Broncos relying primarily on running the football.
Most of Falls’ rushing yards came from one running back, junior Nick Janttie, who ran 114 times for 631 yards and seven touchdowns.
Forty-one of Janttie’s rushing attempts, a single game school record, came in the Oct. 14 victory over Hibbing when he ran for 261 yards. His longest running play was 44 yards for a touchdown Sept. 16 against Virginia.
The only other Bronco to rush for more than 100 yards in 2011 was junior Beau Herzig, who missed much of the season due to injury. Herzig ran 32 times for 104 yards and a touchdown.
Junior quarterback Gunnar Anderson threw for six touchdowns as he completed 76 passes in 167 attempts for 851 yards.
His longest touchdown pass went to senior Josh Owen from 36 yards away in the season finale Oct. 19 against Greenway/ Nashwauk-Keewatin. The two also connected on the season’s longest pass play of 38 yards on Sept. 2 at Foley.
Anderson ended the season with nine interceptions.
Three Falls receivers had more than 100 reception yards and accounted for all six passing touchdowns.
Owen led the Broncos with 30 receptions for 379 yards and four touchdowns. Freshman offensive end Ben Humbert caught 23 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown. Janttie added 14 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown.
Falls’ only defensive scoring this season came Oct. 7 when Owen intercepted a pass 30 yards for a touchdown against Eveleth-Gilbert.
