Winning this week’s Homecoming game would give International Falls’ football team its first victory of the 2011 season.
The Broncos are 0-4 in the Sea-Range Conference and 0-5 overall after losing last Friday at Hermantown, 49-0.
Though Hermantown, which remains undefeated, had 413 yards on offense, compared to 200 for the Falls, the Broncos almost doubled the Hawks in the air with 165 passing yards.
“Our passing attack was good, not just because our receivers were running the routes good, but also we had some things fixed on our offensive line with our pass blocking,” said Broncos head coach Jay Boyle. “We pass-blocked pretty well against a very good Hermantown team.”
Falls junior quarterback Gunnar Anderson completed 15 of 31 passes, the longest for 34 yards to freshman offensive end Ben Humbert, who ended up with six catches for 97 yards.
After coming through the Hermantown game “very healthy,” Boyle said some Bronco players previously injured should be returning for the Homecoming game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday at Sports Stadium.
“Not everyone’s going to be back, but we should be a lot healthier than we have been in a while,” he said.
Falls’ Homecoming opponent, Eveleth-Gilbert, also enters Friday’s game winless on the season. Boyle said he believes the Bronco players will be able to stay focused this week on winning their first game of the season.
“I think they want this win,” Boyle said.
With three games left on Falls’ regular season schedule, Boyle said winning the remaining games will be key for the Broncos to qualify the playoffs.
“I believe we’re going to have to win the last three games, but that’s not to say if we were to only win two of the three that it’s not possible,” he said. “It’s impossible to know right now for sure, not knowing the actual equation that the QRF uses to figure out seeding.”
