Despite holding a second-quarter lead and being tied at halftime, an upset wasn’t in the works Tuesday night for the Littlefork-Big Falls football team.
The Vikings, seeded No. 8 in the Section 7 9-man football pairings, weren’t able to score in the second half and ended up losing to the No. 1 seed, North Woods, 30-14, in the opening-round tournament game at Cook.
The Grizzlies, ranked No. 4 statewide, improved to 9-0. L-BF ended the season 2-7.
The postseason contest was more competitive than when the two teams faced each other during the regular season Sept. 9 at Littlefork, where North Woods won 52-18.
On Tuesday night, the Grizzlies scored first when Elijahjuan Dotts ran into the end zone from 12 yards away to take an early 6-0 lead.
The Vikings tied the game later in the opening quarter when John Reller scored on a touchdown run.
L-BF, which primarily has run the football this season, took the lead in second quarter when quarterback Bryce Burmeister connected on a 19-yard touchdown pass to Richie Van Drunen, who added a two-point conversion run to put the Vikings in front, 14-6.
Dotts scored his second touchdown run before halftime and North Woods quarterback Andrew Anderson ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14 at intermission.
The Grizzlies went in front to stay in the third quarter when Dotts scored this third touchdown on a two-yard run and added the two-point conversion.
North Woods scored its final touchdown when Anderson connected on a 10-yard scoring strike to Jordan Villebrun.
