After falling behind early by two goals, a power-play goal by Kyler Schneider 1:14 into overtime lifted International Falls’ boys hockey team Wednesday night to a 5-4 victory over Osseo in the Broncos’ opening game at the Warroad Tournament.
“It was a battle, that was for sure,” said Falls head coach Bruce Elson.
Osseo held a 2-0 lead 6:08 into the opening period following goals from Tyler Sims and Corbin Cole.
Later in the period, the Broncos tied the game with a pair of goals 7 seconds apart. Lucas DeBenedet scored assisted by Mason Meyer and Schneider. Then Brett Musich found the net on an assist from DeBenedet with 3:39 left in the period.
Both teams then exchanged goals in the next two periods before overtime.
Aaron Dolby pulled Osseo back in front on a power-play goal 6:23 into the second period. Then 5:08 later, Meyer tied the game assisted by Musich and DeBenedet.
Falls took its first lead of the game 6:57 into the third period on a power-play goal from Erik Lassila assisted by Christian Kittelson. The Broncos held the lead until Osseo forward Bret Moody scored with 47 seconds left in regulation.
A tripping penalty on Osseo’s Mike Rakos gave Falls a power play in overtime to score the winning goal. For the game, Osseo committed nine penalties, compared to three for the Broncos.
On Thursday, Falls ended up losing its tournament game against Grafton, N.D., 3-1.
