The International Falls boys hockey team is on a two-game winning streak after tasting defeat for the first time this season.
On Friday, the Broncos lost at home to Hibbing/Chisholm, 4-2.
“The kids played three periods hard,” said Broncos head coach Bruce Elson. “We never game up, even when we let the lead slip away.”
Falls took the early 1-0 lead with 10:21 left in the opening period when Mason Meyer scored a power-play goal assisted by Nick Anderson and Brett Musich.
The Bluestreaks tied the game with 3:14 left in the second period when Adam Johnson scored on an assist by Josh Bestul.
Hibbing/Chisholm took the lead with 10:07 left in the final period when Johnson scored again. Then Joe Anderson gave the Bluestreaks a two-goal lead on a power-play goal with 9:01 to play.
The Broncos pulled within a goal with 5:30 to play when Christian Kittelson scored assisted by Erik Lassila and Broc Friend.
Falls found itself short-handed in pursuit of the tying goal late in the third period when the team’s point leader, Lucas DeBenedet, was called for tripping with 1:27 to play.
When the Broncos were threatening to score, Hibbing/Chisholm defenseman Mike Pechovnik was called for delay of game with 57 seconds to play when he knocked the goal off its moorings.
Pechovnik ended up in the penalty box as the game continued with no penalty shot being awarded to the Falls.
“We pulled the goalie, we get five guys down deep working the puck around and we just got unlucky,” Elson said. “We had a couple good chances. It just didn’t go in the net.”
Hibbing/Chisholm added an empty-net goal by Cole Schafer with 5 seconds left in the game.
The Broncos outshot the Bluejacket, 27-26. Falls goalie Wes Gunnerson made 22 saves.
I. Falls 6, Proctor 4
Falls scored the first four goals Saturday night en route to a 6-4 home victory over Proctor.
“We played very well (in the) first period,” Elson said. “The second and third period we played as poor as we have played all season and against a team we should have run it up on.
“We had trouble (with) communication. We didn’t move the puck effectively. We made bad decisions, and we paid for it....We were our own worst enemy in that game.”
The Broncos led 3-0 after the first period with goals by Luke Spilde, DeBenedet and Kyler Schneider, the latter two scoring on the power play.
Senior Defenseman Jack Bragg extended Falls’ lead to four goals on a power play with 12:46 left in the second period.
Two power-play goals by the Rails narrowed the deficit to 4-2, before the Broncos’ Joel Skirten scored the sixth power-play goal of the game with 12:44 remaining in the game.
“We want to put the puck in the net on the power play, and (the Broncos) did play well on the power play,” Elson said. “But here again, five on five, we’ve got to play better hockey. We’ve got to play smarter hockey.”
Falls led by only a goal with 10:27 to play after Proctor scored two more times in the third period at full strength.
The Rails pulled goalie Hunter Cummins out of the net late in the game for an additional attacker when Bragg shot into the empty net for his second goal with 19 seconds left.
Falls outshot Proctor, 32-30, as Gunnerson made 26 saves to record the victory in goal.
I. Falls 6, LOW 1
The Broncos overcame a 1-0 deficit after the first 17 minutes with three goals in the second period and three more in the third period to win at home Tuesday against Lake of the Woods, 6-1.
“The last two periods we played really well,” Elson said. “The first period we played very well, too, but made a few mistakes.”
Falls outshot the Bears, 52-9, as Gunnerson got the win in goal for the Broncos.
“We kept the puck in their zone most of the game, and that’s what we want to accomplish,” Elson said.
Evan Torgeson scored the Lake of the Woods’ only goal on an assist from Bryson Jasper with 12:11 left in the opening period.
Lassila tied the game with an unassisted goal with 14:49 to play in the second period. Goals by Kittelson and Meyer extended Falls’ lead to 3-1 going into the final 17 minutes.
Lassila picked up another goal in the final period, which was capped off by goals from Schneider and DeBenedet.
The Broncos are 4-1 for the season and play Friday at Virginia and on Saturday host Thief River Falls.
