About the only thing the Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin boys hockey team was able to stop Friday night at Bronco Arena was a continuously running clock from starting in the final period.

The Falls, which led 5-0 going in the third period, outshot the Raiders, 46-20, on the way to a 5-2 victory.

Broncos head coach Bruce Elson said the team’s third and fourth lines were on the ice late in the game when Greenway/N-K scored twice.

“Getting two goals scored on us in the last 2 minutes of the game certainly that’s not what we wanted to happen, but we got a lot of insight into the depth of our team,” Elson said.

Christian Kittelson scored the Falls’ only goal in the opening period on an assist by Broc Friend.

Friend scored the first of the Broncos’ four second-period goals on a power play assisted by Kittelson and Kyler Schneider.

Lucas DeBenedet then got an assist by Nick Anderson to give Falls a three-goal advantage.

The Broncos’ final two goals came within 16 seconds of each other with less than 2:30 left in the second period when Mason Meyer scored assisted by Alex Kennedy and DeBenedet, followed by Anderson’s goal assisted by DeBenedet.

“Even up until the last couple of minutes, we were playing very well,” Elson said. “The boys were moving the puck. They got a lot of shots on goal. We didn’t put in as many as we thought that we probably could have against these guys, but when they’ve got a good goaltender (Erikur Arnason) it’s tough.

“We’ve got to score on tough goalies, and getting four goals in the second period was a good boost for the kids.”

Wes Gunnerson recorded the win in goal for the Falls, which improved to 10-6.

The Broncos next host Detroit Lakes on Saturday afternoon.
