Littlefork-Big Falls’ football team won for the first time this season in a big way on the road Friday.
The Vikings trounced Cherry, 52-14. L-BF improved to 1-5, while Cherry remained winless at 0-6.
“It’s always good to win...,” said Vikings head coach Derek Bilben. “It was very good for our confidence.”
After L-BF had given up 50 or more points in four of its five losses this season, last Friday’s game at Cherry marked the first time in 2011 the Vikings reached the 50-point mark.
L-BF scored first when a touchdown run from a yard away by Mitch Nelson and a two-point conversion gave the Vikings an 8-0 lead after the first quarter.
Both teams combined for 50 points in the second quarter when L-BF outscored Cherry, 36-14.
After the two teams exchanged touchdown runs with the Vikings’ Bryce Burmeister running into the end zone from 13 yards away and Cherry’s Spencer Salo scoring on a 35-yard scamper, Nelson returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.
L-BF scored three more touchdowns before halftime. Richie Van Drunen ran into the end zone from five yards away. After Salo scored another touchdown for Cherry on a 71-yard run, the Vikings closed out the first half with rushing touchdowns of 53 yards by John Reller and a yard away by Nelson.
Nelson, who ended up with two rushing touchdowns and another on a kickoff return, rushed for 78 yards on nine carries.
The only scoring in the second half came on Reller’s second rushing touchdown from 17 yards away. Reller led the Vikings in rushing with 107 yards on 11 carries.
L-BF once again picked up most of its offensive yardage on the ground with 245 yards on 29 carries.
Van Drunen, who rushed for 45 yards on seven carries, registered the Vikings’ only pass reception on a 26-yard catch from Burmeister.
Though L-BF will automatically qualify for the postseason with only eight teams in its Section, Bilben said the Vikings will be looking to improve their seeding position in the final two regular season games.
L-BF plays Friday at Albrook before closing out the regular season at home a week from today against Bigfork, which hosted the Vikings on Sept. 1 to open the season.
