Though no one on the Bronco girls swimming and diving team qualified for last weekend’s Class A state meet at the University of Minnesota’s Aquatic Center, several on the 2011 team ended up being the top-10 fastest swimmers in school history in various events.

Senior Morgan Bruess finished the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 6.82 seconds to become the second fastest swimmer in that event in school history.

Bruess recorded that time Nov. 12 in the Section 7A finals to finish third. She missed qualifying for the state meet by 37-hundreths of a second.

Lucy Nevanen set the Falls school record in the 100 backstroke at 1:05.58 in 2006.

In the 50 freestyle, two Bronco girls swimmers — senior Rachel Adams and sophomore Breanna Shofner — became top-five swimmers. Adams was clocked in 26.24 for fourth fastest, while Shofner’s best time this year came in at 26.44 for fifth fastest.

Ashley Mitchell set the Falls school record in the 50 freestyle at 25.45 in 2003.

In the 100 breaststroke, three Falls swimmers made the school’s all-time top 10 this season. Senior Ashley Hasbargen clocked a time of 1:17.11 in 2011 to be the fifth fastest. Shofner’s time of 1:18.26 made her the seventh fastest. And Junior Sarah Todd became the ninth-fastest swimmer in that event with a time of 1:19.02.
