In three women’s hockey games held at Bronco Arena this past weekend, Rainy River Community College didn’t lose as the Voyageurs won two and tied one against the Western Predators from the Manitoba Women’s Junior Hockey League.
In the opening game Saturday morning, RRCC fell behind a goal in the opening period, but scored twice in the final period to win, 2-1.
Both Voyageurs goals came late in the game as Kaylynn McBurney-Flett tied the contest at 1-1 on an assist by Kristen Penner with 3:59 left in the third period. Brittany Johnson scored the winning goal assisted by Lindsey Roehrig with 3:19 left to play.
Freshman goalie Randi Stewart saved 23 of 24 shots on goal for the Voyageurs for a .958 save percentage.
All of the scoring took place early in Saturday night’s game, which ended in a 1-1 tie after a five-minute overtime session. Both teams had pink-colored hockey blades and the Western Predators wore pink jerseys on “pink the rink” night for breast cancer awareness.
It took only 1:24 into the game when Penner scored RRCC’s only goal assisted by Carlee Bosma and Johnson. The Western Predators’ Amanda Morrison tied the game on a short-handed goal with 1:37 left in the first period.
Voyageurs goalie Katie Stearns saved 20 of 21 shots on goal for a .952 save percentage.
In the final game held midday Sunday, RRCC once again led first, but this time was able to win in overtime, 4-3.
Janet Scherrer opened the scoring for the Voyageurs with 12:07 left in the second period assisted by McBurney-Flett and Courtney Laycock.
Roehrig scored an unassisted goal with 12:50 left in the third period, when RRCC’s third goal in regulation came 1:14 later when McBurney-Flett scored assisted by Scherrer and Laycock.
The game-winning goal came with 1:30 left in overtime when Penner scored on an assist by Roehrig.
Voyageurs goalie Rachael Grotte made 28 saves on 31 shots on goal for a .903 save percentage.
For the weekend, the three RRCC goalies combined for 71 saves on 76 shots on goal for a .934 save percentage.
McBurney-Flett and Penner led the Voyageurs offensively with each recording two goals and an assist over three games.
On the power play, RRCC scored only three times in 17 opportunities for 18 percent. Three of the seven goals for the weekend came on the power play.
The Voyageurs are slated to return to action Nov. 12-13 when they play Minot State in a series at Minot, N.D.
