Rainy River Community College’s volleyball team opened Minnesota College Athletic Conference Northern Division action Friday at Grand Rapids and ended up losing the match to Itasca by dropping all three games.

Haylee Gates led the Voyageurs with 10 kills.

On Saturday, RRCC placed third in the Itasca Tournament. The Voyageurs defeated Anoka-Ramsey, 2-0, Mesabi Range, 2-0, and Gogebic, 2-1. Their only match loss was against Northland in three sets, 25-21, 16-25, 13-15.

RRCC’s statistical leaders for the four matches on Saturday included:

• Katrina Wreggitt, 29 kills, eight blocks.

• Haylee Gates, 23 kills, eight ace serves, six blocks.

• Kelly Sorensen, 48 digs.

• Tiffany Schumacher, 16 kills, 26 digs, six blocks.

• Emily Ziegler, 17 kills, four blocks.

• Nakita Estling, 68 set assists, 28 digs, seven service aces.

• Molly Baldwin, 17 digs.

Estling, a 5-5 freshman from Warroad, was also named the MCAC Northern Division’s “Setter of the Week.”

She had 24 assists in the win over Gogebic and 18 more in the victory over Northern Division foe Mesabi Range.

RRCC head coach Mel Millerbernd said she was happy with the way the Voyageurs played.

“We regrouped after Friday’s loss,” she said. “To place third in this tough eight-team tournament is a great accomplishment.”

The Voyageurs host their first home match of the 2011 season today at 6:30 p.m. in a rematch against Northland.
