Rainy River Community College’s volleyball team improved to 2-2 in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference’s Northern Division after sweeping Hibbing on Wednesday night in RRCC’s home gym, 25-20, 25-12, 25-9.

“This was a big one for us,” said Voyageurs head coach Mel Millerbernd. “Hibbing has been struggling a little bit, so we knew we had to get them when they were down.

“We played well, though. Finally, we hit the ball and kind of came together as a team, I thought.”

The first two games were tied around the midway point to 25 before RRCC pulled in front.

The opening game was deadlocked at 13-13 before the Voyageurs scored five straight points. Hibbing then outscored RRCC 6-3 to pull within two, but a 4-1 run by the Voyageurs sealed the victory.

RRCC turned an 11-11 tie in game two into a rout by outscoring Hibbing 14-1.

The Voyageurs dominated game three from the start by scoring the first 11 points.

“It’s all a game of momentum, and we had the momentum on our side,” Millerbernd said.

Tiffany Schumacher led RRCC with 12 kills, while Emily Ziegler and Haylee Gates each added seven kills. Nakita Estling had 31 set assists.
