After losing a volleyball match Friday night against St. Cloud Tech, Rainy River Community College ended up the following day winning the St. Cloud Tech Tournament.

RRCC lost to St. Cloud Tech in three games, 24-26,24-26,13-25.

The Voyageurs’ statistical leaders included: Kelly Sorensen, 26 digs; Nakita Estling, 26 set assists; Tiffany Schumacher, nine kills; and Haylee Gates and Katrina Wreggitt, seven kills each.

On Saturday, RRCC won three matches to win the St. Cloud Tech Tournament.

The Voyageurs defeated Oak Hills College, 25-13, 25-6. Gates had eight kills and three ace serves, while Estling added 12 set assists.

RRCC beat Vermilion, 25-12, 25-15. Schumacher had seven kills, Sorensen provided 14 digs and Estling added 18 set assists.

The Voyageurs also swept Mesabi Range, 27-25, 25-23. Estling recorded 24 set assists and four ace serves. She had 2 ace serves to end both games for the victories.

Emily Ziegler and Wreggitt each had seven kills, while Gates and Schumacher added six kills apiece.

MCAC honors

For their performance last week over six matches, four of which RRCC won, Sorensen and Schumacher both received weekly honors in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference’s Northern Division.

Sorensen, who averaged 5.47 digs per game, was named the “Libero of the Week.” The sophomore from Roseau recorded 26 digs in matches against both Bismarck State College and St. Cloud Tech.

Schumacher, who had 46 kills and 59 digs last week, was named the “All-Around Player of the Week.” The sophomore from Richmond also had made 93 percent of her serves with seven aces.

The Voyageurs, who improved their season match record to 10-9 overall and 2-2 in the MCAC, play today at 6 p.m. in Brainerd against Central Lakes.
